The Savannah River Cancer Foundation is a locally created and sponsored non-profit organization.  Established in 2003, the Foundation operates from monies received through grants, donations and fundraisers.  The Foundation is not part of a national organization and all monies received stay here, in our communities, to aid local cancer patients and to fund programs to promote the early detection and prevention of cancer.  The Foundation is guided by a board of directors, the majority of whom are either cancer survivors or have been closely affected by cancer.

Our Programs

Patient Support Program

The Savannah River Cancer Foundation offers assistance to cancer patients of any age, with any type of cancer, being treated at any facility.  The only criteria is that the patient live in Aiken, Edgefield, Barnwell or Allendale county in South Carolina.

Emotional Support is available through our Emotional Support Group and our CanHope organization of volunteers.  Our Emotional Support Group meets the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 3 p.m., in the Parlor of First Baptist Church of Aiken.  It is non-denominational and chaplain-facilitated.  For directions call 270-3958 or call our office at 649-5433.

Educational support is available in the form of individual consultations to refer to other local, state and federal agencies and organizations that provide a variety of help.  Additional information can be found in our "Cancer Resources" heading on this website, with direct links to other cancer-specific organizations.   We also provide Fact Sheets listing information, including warning signs, of some of the most common cancers.

Economic support is available to lower-income cancer patients that meet designated financial criteria (income within 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines).  Financial aid is provided to:

  • Help pay for cancer-related medications
  • Help pay for costs of transportation to and from treatment and doctors' appointments.  This aid comes in the form of gas vouchers or, for those who can't drive, assistance with transportation by local agencies, where available.
Early Detection and Prevention programs -- The Savannah River Cancer Foundation has various activities, including available speakers, to disseminate information regarding the importance of screening and early detection of cancer, as well as the warning signs and symptoms and standard tests for various cancers.  It also offers materials and programs aimed at the prevention of cancer in our communities, including the American Lung Association's smoking cessation course called Freedom from Smoking.  Please call our office at 803-649-LIFE (5433) or 866-870-LIFE (5433) for more information.
